Everything you need to browse, curate, and organize.

Multi-video grid

Play 1, 4, 9, or 16 videos in one resizable window. Aspect-fit or fill. Mute all or just one.

Collections

Save any set of folders as a named Collection. Each remembers its grid size, sort, and view preferences.

Picks

Press P to mark the keepers. Switch to Reviewing mode to act on them — copy, tag, rename, or move.

Star ratings

Rate any video 1 to 5 stars. Independent from picks. Press 1–5 to rate, 0 to clear.

Bulk rename

Rename picks in batch. Replace, add prefix, add suffix, or use custom patterns with counters. Live preview before applying.

Command-scrub

Hold Command and drag across any cell to scrub through that video. Release and it resumes.

Sort and filter

Sort by name, date, size, Finder tag, or folder. Search by name, tag, path, or notes. Filter by Finder tag color.

Finder tags

Read and set Finder tags right from the app. Bulk-tag all picks at once.

Bulk copy and move

Copy or move picked files to any folder. Auto-uniques filename clashes. Move always confirms.

Multiple windows

Open two Collections side by side. Each window is independent.

Backup and restore

Back up all Collections to a single archive. Restore on another Mac. Export and import individually.

Boss key

Hide the whole app instantly with a keystroke.

Stays awake

Questions.

What video formats are supported?
Anything macOS can play: MP4, MOV, M4V, and most common codecs. Files it can't play are marked unsupported and never crash the app.
What are Collections?
A Collection is a saved workspace. It remembers your source folders, picks, star ratings, grid size, sort order, and view preferences. Open a Collection and everything is exactly where you left it.
What are Picks?
Picks are videos you mark as keepers. Browse in Picking mode, press P on any cell. Switch to Reviewing mode to act on them — copy, tag, rename, or move in batch. Switch to Viewing mode to just watch them like a normal grid.
Does VidViewer modify my files?
Only when you tell it to. Rename, copy, move, and Finder tag operations are all explicit actions with confirmation. Playback never touches your files.
Does it upload anything?
No. VidViewer runs entirely on your Mac. No telemetry, no network calls, no cloud. Your data stays in Application Support on your machine.
Where is my data stored?
Collections, picks, ratings, and preferences are stored as JSON in Application Support. You can back up all Collections to a single archive and restore on another Mac.
How many videos can I watch at once?
1, 4, 9, or 16 in a responsive grid you can resize. Open multiple windows to watch two Collections side by side.
What macOS version do I need?
macOS 13.0 or later. Requires Apple Silicon (M1 or newer).
Will it handle a huge collection?
Yes. Scanning is asynchronous and handles thousands of files without freezing. Source folders are re-scanned when you open a Collection, so new files appear automatically.
What if I unplug an external drive?
VidViewer detects missing source folders and shows an amber warning. Plug the drive back in and reopen the Collection — everything reconnects. Individual missing files get an orange banner with options to wait, remove from picks, or close.
What's the boss key?
A keystroke that instantly hides the app. Useful when someone walks by.
Can I customize the appearance?
Yes. Choose System, Dark, or Light theme. Toggle the cell hover overlay on or off. Set default grid size, sort order, skip duration, and more in Settings.
